Clinical Hypnosis and Childbirth
The use of hypnotherapy in pregnancy and childbirth has been practiced for more than a century, and is said to be one of the most useful and rewarding applications of hypnosis.
Childbirth is considered psychologically and physiologically challenging for women. Although an epidural provides a pain-free alternative, it does not necessarily result in a satisfying childbirth experience. Today, an increasing number of women (including many celebrities) are electing to use clinical hypnosis during childbirth.
The reasons are clear :
• Effective pain management for many
• Reduced delivery time
• Reduced dependence of chemical analgesia (epidural)
• Greater enjoyment of the childbirth experience
• Better bonding with baby
• Virtually no post-partum depression
• Greater autonomy and sense of involvement and control
• Reduced effect of anaesthesia on the baby
• Happier babies who settle more easily
• Faster healing and recovery after delivery
Clinical Hypnosis in Pregnancy
In addition, using clinical hypnosis during pregnancy :
• Reduces anxiety and fears
• Helps manage morning sickness and other discomforts such as bloating
• Facilitates effective bonding
Medical Opinion :
Improved training and knowledge is expected to increase the use of clinical hypnosis in childbirth. Over 50% of South Australian anaesthetists endorse the use of clinical hypnosis. In the UK, the Midwifery Association estimate that self-hypnosis will be standard practice within a decade.
